Dear SharonKingWorldWide Community, Amazing Families, Advocates, and Educators,
Welcome to August a month of new beginnings, fresh starts, and rising hope! As summer winds down, we prepare for a season filled with opportunity, structure, and learning. At SharonKingWorldWide, our mission remains strong: to uplift the voices of our special needs children and empower families with resources, advocacy, and unwavering support.
Back-to-School, Back to Empowerment
The back-to-school season can bring a mix of excitement and anxiety, especially for children with special needs. As classrooms reopen, so do opportunities for growth, inclusion, and advocacy.
Here are a few reminders as you prepare:
- Review your child’s IEP or 504 Plan – advocate for any updates needed.
- Meet with school staff early – open communication builds understanding.
- Create a calming transition plan – visuals, countdown calendars, and routines help reduce anxiety.
- Celebrate small wins – every step forward matters.
- Remember: You are your child’s greatest advocate. Let your voice be heard and your presence felt.
Special Needs Awareness in August
While August is not as widely recognized for national special needs months as other times of year, there are still vital observances and moments to honor:
National Immunization Awareness Month
- Children with disabilities may be at higher risk for illness. Speak to your healthcare provider to ensure your child is protected and prepared for school.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month
- A rare genetic disorder that affects the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord. Raising awareness brings visibility and supports research for life-saving treatments.
Children's Eye Health and Safety Month
- Vision challenges often go undiagnosed. Eye screenings are vital, especially for nonverbal children or those with developmental delays.
August is a Month of Transition
- Whether your child is entering preschool, elementary, middle school, or high school – transitions can be tough. This is a powerful time to reassess needs, support systems, and your child's goals.
Words of Encouragement
To our phenomenal parents, educators, and warriors in advocacy:
You are doing better than you think.
Every lunch packed, every meeting attended, every meltdown calmed, and every bedtime story read it all matters. You are creating a legacy of love, strength, and advocacy. Never forget that.
